First, a story.

So, my first semester of my freshman year of college, I took this Intro to Women’s Studies class. The class met for five hours a week, one two hour session and one three hour session, and the breakdown of students was what I eventually discovered to be the typical sampling in any Women’s Studies class with no pre-recs at my mid-sized, southern Ohio state school. There were a number of girls who would become, or were already part of, the feminist advocacy groups on campus; there were a number of girls who would prove themselves to be opposed to feminism in both concept and practice, one of whom I distinctly recall giving a presentation on the merits of the “Mrs. Degree,” while my professor’s eye twitched in muted horror; there were a handful of girls and at least one guy I’d come to know later through assorted campus queer groups; and there were, of course, the three to six dudebros, self-admittedly there to “meet chicks,” all but one or two of whom would drop the class after the first midterm. At eighteen, I was myself a feminist in name but not in practice—I believed in the idea behind feminism (which is, for the record, that people should be on equal footing regardless of gender, not that we should CRUSH ALL MEN BENEATH THE VICIOUS HEELS OF OUR DOC MARTENS GLORY HALLELUJAH), but I didn’t actually know anything about it. I could not identify the waves of feminism. Intersectionality and how the movement is crap at it were not things of which I was aware. Never had I ever encountered the writings of bell hooks. In a lucky break, you do not need to know about the waves of feminism, or know what intersectionality is, or have read bell hooks to read this essay! (But you should read bell hooks. Everyone should read bell hooks. bell hooks is FUCKING AWESOME.)

The first couple of weeks of this class were about what you’d expect. The professor was fun and engaging, but she was not exactly pulling out the eye-opening stops on our wide-eyed freshman asses. There were handouts. There were selections of the textbook for reading. There was a very depressing class about domestic violence, abuse, and rape that was the typical rattling off of terms and horrific statistics that everyone winced at, but that nobody really internalized. The dudebros snickered in the back corner, grouped together like they would be infested by cooties if they spread out, occasionally chiming in with helpful comments like, “Dude, the lady on the back of this book is smoking,” and getting turned down by each girl in the class, on whom they were hitting in what I can only assume was a pre-determined descending order of hotness. The queer kids, myself included, huddled in the other corner making pithy comments. The up-and-coming active feminists glared at the bros, who leered back, and the Mrs. Degree-friendly crowd mostly texted under their desks and made it very clear that they were only there for humanities credit. Again, it was a fairly typical southern Ohio state school class full of fairly typical southern Ohio state school freshmen. Nobody was super engaged, is what I am saying here. Nobody, myself included, was really eating it up with a spoon.

And then one day, my professor opened the class with, “So, who here has seen Beauty and the Beast?”

Which came first, the exclusion or the misogyny?

I hate the Idiot Nerd Girl meme. I hate it for much the same reason Feminspire writer Jessica Bagnall hates it: the entrenched geek misogyny that informs its pretty pink face. I hate it because it’s a convenient distillation of everything I hate about the “fake geek girl” strawman. I hate it because it vilifies enthusiasm. I hate it because, as a member of the geek community and a geek-industry professional, and especially as a feminist geek, I nurture a deep and abiding dislike for gatekeepers.

The thing about nerd/geek culture is, I think, is that its one conceived by mainstream exclusion. Every television show depicting their idea of a typical high school usually has the nerd group, stereotypically depicting a group of boys as unattractive, socially awkward and in no way desired by the rest of the school community unless its to help a jock pass his history class.

Watch something enough times and it eventually becomes embedded in our cultural consciousness as truth. Somewhere along the way, nerds in real life, socially awkward or otherwise, became convinced that their place in society is as an “other.” This otherisation only gets compounded when a nerd happens to be POC, a female, transgender, etc, as they already face the discrimination that come with every day life. They may have found a place that accepts them for their interests, but only on a superficial level. That acceptance comes with extra hurdles:

This is what I see when I look at the Idiot Nerd Girl meme: the colleague who sat on a panel with three men, a subsequent write up of which listed each of the guys by their professional qualifications and her as just “a good-looking gal”; the friend who was cornered by a group of guys in her comics shop who would not and could not believe she really liked comics even when she nailed every question of an impromptu quiz on superhero continuity; visible, vocal, and statistically significant demographics dismissed as nonexistent or irrelevant; geek after geek who’s been ostracized and humiliated for being the wrong gender or the wrong color or the wrong sexual orientation or too pretty or not pretty enough or otherwise failing to meet a narrow rubric designed to justify the insularity of a community that prides itself on being forward-thinking.

The Idiot Nerd Girl meme takes the form of a female primarily because of objectification. In those high school teledramas nerds were depicted as socially awkward and physically undesirable. How many episodes have there been when the pretty popular girl loses a bet or something and has to go on a date with the world’s ugliest nerd only to end up liking him and being taught a lesson about being superficial?

This isn’t just “beauty is only skin deep.” There are a lot more sinister messages at work here, ones we often don’t notice or acknowledge. First, there’s the fact that pretty popular girl is never usually an intellectual. Secondly, pretty popular girl is a reward for unpopular nerd boy. Just think about how pervasive the “she’s out of my league” story is, where the guy wins the pretty popular girl. There are loads of themes of objectification between nerd and girl that we absorb on a daily basis, even in the fandoms we adore. How many cherished video games are there where the princess or female lead is reward for your efforts?

There is no Idiot Nerd Boy meme.

And there never will be. Because Pretty Popular Girl in that high school teledrama is what we see when a girl cosplays Hope Summers. We can’t possibly conceive that she’s a legit geek because that would be forcing us to accept that she’s not a reward, that she’s not an object, tantalizing in her sudden presence within your geek sphere. “She can’t possibly be a geek, she’s supposed to be out of my league!”

I hate the Idiot Nerd Girl meme because it’s not just a meme in the diluted ‘net-slang sense. It reflects and recycles and reinforces a bundle of more traditionally defined memes: the sticky and tenacious subtexts and cultural dogmas that justify and normalize misogyny and harassment and make the geek community so seethingly toxic to female members–and especially female newcomers–that it doesn’t even need a formal gate to keep them out. Idiot Nerd Girl is the throwaway byproduct of a culture that regularly responds to criticism from women with flurries of rape threats.

The misogyny came before the exclusion.

If Pretty Popular Girl exists to be popular, to be desired, then she’s an object before she even decides to make that superficial bet. In order not to be excluded as the nerds have been, she has to be an object everybody wants, and if she so happens to have an extracurricular interest that doesn’t involve making herself more desirable, then it must be erroneous. It can’t possibly be real.

I know that a lot of self-identified–and more externally-identified–geeks and nerds are distrustful of outsiders, and that that mistrust is often grounded in an early personal history of harassment and marginalization. I know this because they’re my friends and lovers and colleagues, and because it’s my history, too. Like many of my peers, I looked to the geek community as a safe haven, and by hook, crook, and happy accident, I was lucky enough to land in a corner of it that truly was.

Wanna know what I think? Probably not, but here I go anyway: We need to abandon the label of geek. Throw away the word “nerd.” When we’ve got movies like the Avengers raking it the millions and bringing comics to the mainstream, then why are we clutching these labels that were invented to exclude and marginalize us? Why is being an intellectual still considered uncool? Maybe its because we’re the only ones who still think that it is. And we show it every time we rage quit on the internet, every time we exclude a newcomer, every time we send a rape threat to that girl who sniped us a hundred times in COD.

Seriously. Stop referring to yourself as a nerd. It’s okay to be proud. It’s okay to announce your interests. But “nerd” and “geek” are ultimately self-deprecating terms, no matter how many times we try to reclaim them.

Maybe, just maybe, we’re just people, with varied interests. Maybe if we looked at ourselves as people first and fans second, we’d be able to do the same to women for once.

Some context for the idiots claiming the women are overreacting:

This occurred at a Slut Walk. For those not familiar with it, the Slut Walk is basically a peaceful protest seeking to eliminate the rape apologism so prevalent in society. The basis is that no woman is “asking for it,” with “it” being rape. It’s not a feminist protest; it’s a human rights protest.

Many of the protesters, as you can probably imagine, have dealt with sexual harassment or rape in their own lives. Many of them have structured their daily activities to avoid being raped. The gathering is supposed to be a place for them to feel empowered and able to recover in the company of those who understand what they’ve been through or who will not blame them.

Nobody at a Slut Walk will tell a survivor that it’s her fault. They will not ask what she was wearing to provoke her attacker. Nobody will say she had too much to drink. Nobody will tell the men in the group that they are inherently rapists themselves, and nobody will tell a male survivor that his experience “wasn’t really rape.”

Then, this fellow comes along. He sees this gathering of survivors and their supporters, and to him, it’s a joke. He sees feminazis. He sees girls who are taking “a bit of fun” too seriously. And what does he do? He exposes himself to this group of survivors and supporters - some of whom are, in fact, underage.

He sexually harasses literally hundreds of women in one act. Aside from public indecency, there was cruel intent in his actions. He wanted to make them uncomfortable. He wanted to “put them in their place.” Other photos from this event show him flipping the protesters off and laughing at their anger.

And there are still people defending his actions. There are those who still feel like these women were asking for itand that they deserved to be harassed for trying to claim they weren’t. There are those who feel that women should be taught a lesson this way, and they applaud this man’s actions.

So no, he didn’t pull out his dick in front of feminist protesters. He harassed dozens - if not hundreds - of rape survivors. The reaction to his actions alone outline the purpose of the Slut Walk.

For those of you still doubting whether what he did was wrong (and I do wonder if there’s something wrong with you, if you have doubts), let me give you an analogous situation. Imagine a gathering of black civil rights activists. Imagine Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, and all their colleagues gathered together to demonstrate that being black did not make them lesser people. That being black and living in the South did not mean they were “asking” to be the target of hate crimes.

And at this gathering, a white man decides he should teach them a lesson by pointedly hanging a noose from the nearest tree and laughing at their anger. And other white men, laughing along with him, commend him for taking these activists down a peg.

That’s what happened here. It’s not an “OMG, I can’t believe he did that!” moment. It’s an “OMG, there are people who think this is okay” moment. And the fact is, it’s not. It never will be. And that’s the take home message of this ridiculous rant I’ve written up.

How Moffat Ruined Doctor Who For My Little Sister

Right, so, anyone who follows me knows that I am Not A Moffat Fan.

I have absolutely no expectations or high-hopes for the new season of Doctor Who, (he’s put me right off Sherlock, I probably won’t even watch the new season of that), and to be honest, I am exhausted with pointing out his poor writing, his use of queers as punch-lines or to ‘sex things up a bit’ and his horrendous portrayal of women. Not to mention the fact that he has utterly destroyed a show that was a part of my childhood, hugely important to me, and influenced my further explorations into fantasy and sci-fi. I have made and reblogged countless posts about how disappointed and angry I am, and at this stage I really just feel like ignoring  everything until someone more competent replaces him.

I can remember the exact moment that I realised how bad the writing in Doctor Who had become:

“I don’t get it, one minute she wants to marry you, the next minute she wants to kill you!”

“She’s been brainwashed, it probably makes sense to her. Plus, she’s a woman. Oh, shut up!”

That scene was like two slaps in the face for me. First I am told that the Doctor (my Doctor) now considers my sex to be irrational and over-emotional. Then, after that, I am told that I am not allowed to complain about this. I am not allowed to say anything. I am told “Oh, shut up!” in manner which suggests that if I protest, I clearly just don’t have a sense of humour.

By the Doctor.  The Doctor said that. I can’t even imagine 10 or 9 saying anything like that. It was like the Doctor had become Moffat’s mouth-piece.

After that scene, I literally just sat there, practically in shock, going Oh, wow. That one cut deep. Oh wow that was bad.

So when I watched Asylum of The Daleks, I couldn’t even be bothered. I could not. Even. Be. Bothered. I watched as the pointless, nonsensical plot meandered along, not even able to gather the strength to wonder

Why the hell there are suddenly shitloads of Daleks,

Why the Doctor has a new nickname (The Predator) that is also apparently age-old that we’ve never heard of,

How Skaro has magically appeared again,

Why Moffat thinks we all have the attention span of five-year-olds (a continuing theme)which means he has to break up an important couple off-screen and then BOOM reunite them in the same episode before it even sinks in and we can actually Give A Fuck (Again, a continuing theme – Moffat, I am not going to Give A Fuck about Mels if you cram her down my throat in a montage, and then shoot her, and then have her be River Song all in the space of ten minutes),

Why Amy’s only concern with the whole children thing is ‘oooh poor Rory’ and not ‘actually I was trapped by a freaky cult and forced to give birth against my will so yeah, no, won’t be doing that again’ – Seriously, when she said “I can’t have children” I IMMEDIATELY assumed she meant that it would be mentally too traumatic for her.

Why the hell Moffat thinks he can smugly claim that he represents queers in the show when he keeps pulling shit like “I went through a phase”  and then has the character say that they only mentioned their girl-on-girl experience because they’re flirting.

How the fuck Rory thinks that it is healthy, and not at all passive-aggressive to say “I love you more! We both know it!”. Seriously, that is some fucking Mr. Nice Guy TM behaviour right there. I previously liked Rory, though he had his flaws (e.g. his constant inability to trust Amy when it came to the Doctor), but that was a disturbing insight into the way his mind works. He clearly ‘keeps score’ of the things they both do for each other, and that is just wrong. 2,000 years, Rory? You weren’t ASKED to wait. You didn’t HAVE to. But now you’re going to hold that over Amy’s head as Proof I Love You More And You Can Never Top That forever? After everything Amy has been through? Jesus.

Plus there was the weird implication that if Amy did love Rory less, that means she has less love in her for the Daleks to erase. So if she can’t love Mr. Super Perfect Rory, she can’t love anyone? What about her family, her friends? Get over yourself, Rory.

So many other things. Too many other things.

And to be honest, I wasn’t even going to bother complaining about it. I am just shit sick of Moffat, and his failure to listen to any criticism whatsoever, and his brushing off of the concerns of the show’s fans.

But then something happened that has made me very angry, and I feel the need to share.

So, my roomie gets me a SodaStream for Christmas, albeit it arrived early last year. He knew I wanted one of these nifty little devices so I could make soda at home when I wanted it, and not be limited to just diet colas from the store (since we all know that people who drink diet soda ONLY like…

I’m in the UK and I’ve got a horrible feeling I’m now in exactly the same position you are. I got a Sodastream last year for making fizzy water and it came with two gas cannisters. Tonight, I tried to change it for a third which I bought from a shop and the first thing I noticed was that the plastic top for the cannister was white instead of green like the other two, but I didn’t really think much about it. But when I reassembled the machine and tried to carbonate some water the button was almost impossible to press and I was afraid I would break the machine. After looking online trying to find some troubleshooting stuff I found your post, checked the two gas cylinders and lo and behold, the original one has a flat top, the new one has a pin. I’ll try and phone their helpline tomorrow but I’m going to be annoyed if they’ve changed the design of the cannisters because that makes my machine basically unusable.
